Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) form a family of zinc-containing endopeptidases, which play an important role in the degradation of extracellular matrix proteins. They can also affect many other biological activities, such as cell migration and growth. Regulation of MMP activity occurs at several levels, including transcriptional regulation and inhibition by specific protease inhibitors, called TIMPs.
Kinases and transferases
Kinases and transferases correspond to a class of enzymes that transfer functional groups from a donor molecule to an acceptor. Specifically, kinases catalyze the transfer of phosphate from ATP to hydroxyl side chains on proteins, causing changes in function. Transferases catalyze the transfer of a functional group (eg a methyl or phosphate group) from one molecule to another.
Caspases are a family of cysteine proteases involved in development, cytokine maturation and programmed cell death. There are two subgroups according to their functions in cell death: initiator caspases (caspases 2, 8, 9, and 10) are activated through apoptosis-signaling pathways and activate effector caspases (caspases 3, 6 and 7), which carry out programmed cell death.
