HBQ1 also known as Hemoglobin subunit theta 1 is a component of the hemoglobin complex with a molecular mass of approximately 16 kDa. It is expressed mainly in erythroid tissues where hemoglobin synthesis occurs. Researchers recognize its role in the early stages of erythroid differentiation as well as its expression in embryonic and fetal liver tissue. These activities suggest that it plays a part in various stages of hemoglobin development.

HBQ1 is a component that contributes to oxygen transport in the organism.
