ZNF238 also known as Zinc Finger Protein 238 or RP58 functions as a transcriptional repressor in mammalian systems. It is a protein with a molecular mass around 65 kDa which is relatively typical for zinc finger proteins. ZNF238 contains several zinc finger domains that facilitate its ability to bind DNA and regulate gene expression. This protein exhibits expression in a wide range of tissues but particularly in neural tissues during development suggesting a role in brain and nervous system formation.
Biological function summary

ZNF238 influences cell differentiation and development especially in the context of the nervous system. It functions as a transcription factor and researchers have identified it as part of transcriptional complexes that modulate genes involved in neural development and cell cycle regulation. This modulation assists in maintaining cellular identity and promotes the proper formation of neural structures. ZNF238 enhances its activity by interacting with other transcription factors to synergistically regulate gene expression.

Pathways

ZNF238 contributes to neurogenesis and developmental processes by participating in key signaling pathways. These include the Notch and Wnt pathways which are critical for specifying cell fate and guiding neural progenitor cells. Within these pathways ZNF238 cooperates with other transcription factors to precisely control the expression of target genes. It works closely with proteins such as NeuroD1 and REST which also regulate neural development and differentiation.

ZNF238's role becomes significant in conditions related to neurodevelopment. Abnormal expression or mutations in ZNF238 have associations with developmental disorders and some cancers such as glioblastoma. Its connection to these diseases often involves disruptions in neural cell differentiation and proliferation pathways. Proteins like p53 and MDM2 interact with ZNF238 within these pathological contexts indicating a broader network of molecular dysfunction when ZNF238 is altered. Understanding these interactions provides insight into potential therapeutic targets for related disorders.

靶点信息

Transcriptional repressor that plays a role in various developmental processes such as myogenesis and brain development. Plays a key role in myogenesis by directly repressing the expression of ID2 and ID3, 2 inhibitors of skeletal myogenesis. Also involved in controlling cell division of progenitor cells and regulating the survival of postmitotic cortical neurons. Specifically binds the consensus DNA sequence 5'-[AC]ACATCTG[GT][AC]-3' which contains the E box core, and acts by recruiting chromatin remodeling multiprotein complexes. May also play a role in the organization of chromosomes in the nucleus.
