Trans-sialidase-related protein 3 (TSTA3) also known as GDP-L-fucose synthase is an enzyme responsible for converting GDP-4-keto-6-deoxy-D-mannose to GDP-L-fucose an important step in fucose synthesis. TSTA3 has a molecular mass of approximately 36 kDa. This protein expresses widely with significant expression in tissues like the liver which is a central site for metabolic processes.
Biological function summary

TSTA3 plays a role in fucosylation a fundamental process for the modification of glycoproteins and glycolipids. Fucosylation affects cellular recognition and signaling events. TSTA3 functions independently and as part of no known physical complex but influences several biological activities indirectly through its enzymatic product GDP-L-fucose. This product is critical in multiple cellular functions and structural carbohydrate assemblies.

Pathways

TSTA3 participates in the GDP-L-fucose biosynthesis pathway an essential route for the production of fucose necessary for fucosylation processes. This pathway ties directly to protein interactions involving glycosyltransferases such as fucosyltransferases which facilitate the transfer of fucose to glycoproteins and glycolipids.
