SEPT10 also known as Septin-10 is a member of the septin family characterized by its GTP-binding capability. This protein has a molecular weight of approximately 50 kDa. SEPT10 plays a significant role in cellular processes involving cytoskeletal organization. It is commonly expressed in brain lung and spleen tissues. Septins like SEPT10 form filament structures through hetero-oligomerization allowing for compartmentalization and barrier formation within cells.
Biological function summary

SEPT10 participates in cellular division and morphogenesis. It forms part of larger septin complexes which include other septin proteins acting as a scaffold for recruiting and localizing proteins essential for various biological processes. In addition SEPT10 helps in maintaining cell integrity and shape by regulating the organization of actin and microtubules contributing to centrosome organization during cell division.

Pathways

SEPT10 integrates into pathways related to cell cycle regulation and cytoskeleton organization. In particular it associates with the Rho-signaling pathway influencing cell polarity and shape. In these pathways SEPT10 interacts with proteins like Cdc42 and RhoA contributing to the dynamic remodeling of the cytoskeleton and influencing cellular responses to external stimuli.

SEPT10 has connections to cancer and neurodegenerative conditions. Alterations in SEPT10 expression levels or mutations can disrupt normal cell division influencing tumorigenesis in certain cancers. For example changes in SEPT10 have been observed in glioma a type of brain cancer. Additionally its interaction with amyloid-beta precursor protein links it to Alzheimer's disease where impaired neurogenesis and protein aggregation are prevalent.
