Ribosomal protein S25 (RPS25) also known as eukaryotic ribosomal protein S25 is part of the 40S subunit of the eukaryotic ribosome. It has a molecular weight of approximately 14 kDa. RPS25 is expressed in various tissues throughout the body but shows higher expression levels particularly in tissues with high rates of protein synthesis such as the liver and brain. This protein plays a mechanical role in the assembly and structural stabilization of the small ribosomal subunit which is essential for accurate translation initiation and elongation during protein synthesis.
Biological function summary

Researchers recognize RPS25's contribution to the ribosomal small subunit as part of the ribosome complex. This role is critical for translating genetic information encoded in messenger RNA into functional proteins. Through its involvement in ribosome function RPS25 ensures the fidelity of peptide bond formation and overall protein synthesis. Evidence suggests that successful ribosomal activity involving RPS25 supports cellular growth and maintenance by enabling the efficient synthesis of proteins needed for various biological processes.

Pathways

Ribosome biogenesis and protein synthesis are major pathways integrating RPS25 activity. RPS25 associates with other ribosomal proteins such as RPS3 and RPS6 in the ribosome assembly pathway. Ribosomal function is pivotal in the mTOR signaling pathway which regulates cell growth proliferation and autophagy. Through these interactions RPS25 influences mRNA translation rates and cellular responses to nutrient availability and stress conditions.

Abnormal expression or mutations in RPS25 have connections to specific cancers and Diamond-Blackfan anemia. In cancer altered RPS25 levels may disrupt normal ribosome function potentially contributing to uncontrolled cell growth and tumor progression. Diamond-Blackfan anemia a rare genetic disorder characterized by faulty red blood cell production has shown links to mutations affecting ribosomal proteins. In these disorders disruptions involving RPS25 and other ribosomal proteins such as RPL5 and RPL11 can interfere with normal ribosome biogenesis and function disrupting tissue homeostasis and leading to disease pathogenesis.
