RNF214 also known as Ring Finger Protein 214 is an E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase. It plays a role in tagging proteins with ubiquitin for regulated protein degradation. The protein has a mass of approximately 74 kDa. RNF214 shows expression in many tissues including prostate brain and ovary. This wide expression pattern implies a diverse function potential in cellular processes.
Biological function summary

RNF214 participates in protein homeostasis by facilitating the ubiquitination process. It functions as part of an E3 ligase complex which delivers ubiquitin molecules to substrate proteins. This modification signals these proteins for degradation by the proteasome. Through this activity RNF214 influences protein turnover and maintains cell homeostasis by removing damaged or misfolded proteins ensuring functional protein networks.

Pathways

RNF214 is involved in the ubiquitin-proteasome system and the regulation of MAPK signaling pathways. The protein works closely with other ubiquitin ligases to control protein levels impacting cellular responses like cell cycle and growth. In the MAPK signaling pathway RNF214 can modulate the stability of signaling molecules like MAPK which impacts cell proliferation and differentiation.

RNF214 has associations with neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. Aberrant functioning of RNF214 could lead to an accumulation of misfolded proteins contributing to neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's disease. In cancer changes in RNF214 activity might disrupt normal cell cycle control leading to tumorigenesis. It often connects with other proteins like p53 in the context of these diseases highlighting the importance of its regulatory role in cellular homeostasis.
