The protein PDE8A also known as phosphodiesterase 8A performs as an enzyme that hydrolyzes cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) to adenosine monophosphate (AMP). This action regulates the intracellular levels of cAMP an important second messenger in many signaling pathways. PDE8A has a molecular mass of approximately 100 kDa and is expressed mainly in endocrine tissues like the adrenal gland and thyroid as well as in specific immune cells.
