The protein PDE8A also known as phosphodiesterase 8A performs as an enzyme that hydrolyzes cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) to adenosine monophosphate (AMP). This action regulates the intracellular levels of cAMP an important second messenger in many signaling pathways. PDE8A has a molecular mass of approximately 100 kDa and is expressed mainly in endocrine tissues like the adrenal gland and thyroid as well as in specific immune cells.

The regulatory function of PDE8A on cAMP levels impacts many processes including hormone secretion and immune responses. It often functions independently rather than as part of a complex but sometimes may interface with other proteins mediating these pathways. By controlling cAMP PDE8A influences various biological actions like glucose metabolism and T-cell activation.

Hydrolyzes the second messenger cAMP, which is a key regulator of many important physiological processes (PubMed : 18983167). May be involved in maintaining basal levels of the cyclic nucleotide and/or in the cAMP regulation of germ cell development (PubMed : 18983167). Binding to RAF1 reduces RAF1 'Ser-259' inhibitory-phosphorylation and stimulates RAF1-dependent EGF-activated ERK-signaling (PubMed : 23509299). Protects against cell death induced by hydrogen peroxide and staurosporine (PubMed : 23509299).
