MT-CYB also known as cytochrome b is part of the mitochondrial inner membrane. It plays a fundamental role in electron transport during cellular respiration. The target is sometimes referred to by alternate names such as cytochrome b complex III subunit although the mass of MT-CYB varies depending on its specific isoform. You can find MT-CYB expressed within the mitochondria of nearly all eukaryotic cells where it contributes to energy production.
Biological function summary

MT-CYB facilitates the transfer of electrons from ubiquinol to cytochrome c. It forms part of the complex III also known as the cytochrome bc1 complex which plays a significant role in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Through this electron transport process MT-CYB contributes to the formation of a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane that is essential for ATP synthesis the main energy currency of cells.

Pathways

MT-CYB engages in key steps of the oxidative phosphorylation pathway and the tricarboxylic acid cycle. It closely interacts with other components such as cytochrome c1 and Rieske iron-sulfur protein within the complex III. Together these proteins facilitate the transfer of electrons through the pathway ultimately leading to the generation of ATP.

Mutations in MT-CYB are often associated with mitochondrial diseases like MELAS (Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy Lactic Acidosis and Stroke-like episodes) and LHON (Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy). These diseases can arise due to malfunction in energy production. MT-CYB mutations can also interact with other mitochondrial proteins such as NADH dehydrogenase exacerbating the disease manifestations through impaired electron transport and reduced ATP synthesis.
