IgE mediates the immune responses in the pathogenesis of allergic asthmas. This has been shown in the successful use of recombinant 'humanised' monoclonal antibodies against IgE in the treatment of moderate-to-severe allergic asthma where the antibody forms complexes with free IgE and blocks its interaction with mast cells and basophils.
