Mitochondrial Aminoacyl-tRNA Synthetase 2 (MARS2) is an enzyme responsible for attaching methionine to its corresponding tRNA molecule. This process is essential in the initiation of mitochondrial protein synthesis. MARS2 sometimes referred to as Methionyl-tRNA Synthetase 2 or Methionine-tRNA ligase has a molecular mass of approximately 59 kDa. This protein is expressed in human mitochondria where it fulfills its role in translating genetic information into functional proteins.
Biological function summary

The function of MARS2 is to ensure accurate translation of the mitochondrial genome. It acts as part of the complex machinery that synthesizes mitochondrially encoded proteins necessary for the function of electron transport and ATP production. MARS2's activity is vital in maintaining mitochondrial integrity and cellular energy supply. It also interacts occasionally with other mitochondrial tRNA synthetases ensuring coordinated synthesis of mitochondrial proteins.

Pathways

MARS2 plays a role in the mitochondrial translation pathway and the electron transport chain. These pathways are critical for efficient cellular respiration and energy production.
