The protein known as LIM domain only 3 (LMO3) plays an important role in transcriptional regulation. Alternative names include LMO-3. It has a molecular mass of around 19 kDa. LMO3 contains two LIM domains which are specialized zinc finger-like structures essential for protein-protein interactions. This protein often functions in the nucleus facilitating interactions between different transcriptional machinery components. LMO3 is expressed in various tissues including the central nervous system and some smooth muscle tissues.
Biological function summary

LIM domain only 3 influences cell differentiation and development particularly within neuronal and muscle cells. The presence of LMO3 in these tissues allows it to act as a transcriptional modulator in developmental processes. It works by forming complexes with other proteins including transcription factors to either upregulate or downregulate gene expression. Through these complex formations LMO3 influences vital developmental processes and maintains cellular identity.
