Biological function summary
Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 functions by utilizing a Dot/Icm type IV secretion system which is integral for its replication and survival within host cells. This bacterial pathogen secretes over 300 effector proteins through this system interfering with host cell processes. These proteins help manipulate host cell functions and evade immune response. The bacterium affects the structure of phagosomes converting them into a compartment that resembles endoplasmic reticulum favoring bacterial replication.
Pathways
The infection process involves several intricate mechanisms. Key pathways include the modulation of host endocytic and secretory pathways which are important for avoiding lysosomal degradation. A notable protein interaction involves the host small GTPase Rab1 which the bacteria manipulate to redirect vesicle trafficking and create a niche for replication. Another important interaction includes the restriction of apoptosis signaling pathways allowing the bacterium to avoid early cell death of the host cell.
