IL2RA also known as CD25 or interleukin-2 receptor alpha chain is a protein that performs an important role in the immune system. It has a molecular mass of approximately 55 kDa. This protein is expressed mainly by activated T cells regulatory T cells and recent thymic emigrants. IL2RA forms an important part of the high-affinity IL-2 receptor complex which also includes the beta and gamma chains. The presence of IL2RA ensures effective signaling and response to interleukin-2 a cytokine that promotes the proliferation and differentiation of immune cells.

Biological function summary

IL2RA engages in modulating the immune response as it acts in the high-affinity interleukin-2 receptor complex. It enables the IL-2 signaling that supports the development and expansion of T cells including regulatory T cells which help in maintaining immune tolerance. This receptor plays a fundamental role in T-cell fostered adaptive immunity facilitating the communication between cells that regulate immune responses. By regulating these processes IL2RA maintains balance in the immune system and prevents overactivation.

Pathways

Researchers recognize IL2RA as an essential participant in the JAK-STAT signaling pathway and the MAPK pathway. These pathways promote cellular responses such as growth proliferation and apoptosis which are important for immune function and homeostasis. IL2RA initiates signaling cascades through interaction with the interleukin-2 receptor beta (CD122) and common gamma chain (CD132) illustrating its direct link with these related proteins that manage immune response activities.

IL2RA has implications in autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes where immune cell regulation becomes dysregulated. Dysregulation or mutations in IL2RA can impair its ability to modulate immune responses thereby leading to such autoimmune conditions. Furthermore IL2RA's interaction with other proteins like CD122 and CD132 hints at potential therapeutic targets as these proteins play roles in the disease pathways affecting immune system balance and function.
