HSV2 gB also known as glycoprotein B is a glycoprotein found on the surface of Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 (HSV2). It has a molecular mass of approximately 130 kDa. The glycoprotein is expressed on the envelope of the viral particle playing an important role during the viral infection process. It is responsible for mediating the fusion of the viral envelope with host cell membranes allowing the virus to enter the host cell. This makes HSV2 gB an important player in the lifecycle of the virus facilitating infection and subsequent replication within human cells.
Biological function summary

HSV2 gB is important in the initiation of infection and the spread of the virus within the host organism. It belongs to a group of viral envelope proteins that form a complex interacting with other viral glycoproteins to achieve successful attachment and entry into host cells. The complex includes other glycoproteins such as HSV2 gD and HSV2 gH which work together to mediate membrane fusion and entry functions critical for viral propagation and pathogenicity.

Pathways

HSV2 gB interacts with cellular pathways involved in host cell entry and immune evasion. Important in viral entry pathways gB collaborates with proteins like HSV2 gL to execute the membrane fusion process efficiently. It is also related to pathways that impact immune system recognition. These pathways facilitate HSV2's ability to establish latency and persistence in the host sometimes leading to reactivation and recurrent infections.

HSV2 gB is a central factor in the pathology of herpetic infections primarily genital herpes. The protein's interaction with host immunity contributes to the characteristic symptoms and clinical manifestation of the disease. Moreover HSV2 gB plays a role in the progression of herpetic encephalitis a severe brain infection. It connects with HSV2 gD and gC proteins which also contribute to the virus's disease-causing potential. Understanding HSV2 gB’s role in these diseases guides the development of vaccines and antiviral therapies.
