    gp41/120 is the major HIV protein associated with the HIV envelope. It functions as the viral antireceptor or attachment protein. gp41 (or TM) traverses the envelope, whereas gp120 is present on the outer surface and is noncovalently attached to gp41. The precursor of gp120/41 (gp160) is synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum and is transported via the golgi body to the cell surface. Upon activation of the envelope glycoprotein (gp120/41) by cellular receptors, gp41 undergoes conformational changes that mediate fusion of the viral and cellular membranes.

    ab9065 and ab18633 (gp41 antibodies) Will these products recognize HIV strain LAV in WB?

    Thank you for your patience in this matter. I have received replies from the originators of ab9065 and ab18633. In regards to ab9065, this antibody was produced to the HIV-1 B-3 strain and its' reactivity with the LAV strain has not been tested in WB. Regarding ab18633, this antibody was raised to the HIV IIIB strain and its' reactivity with the LAV strain has not been determined.     Thank you for your enquiry. Ab18633 was raised to HIV-1 env gp41 antigen (recombinant) a.a 466 to a.a 753 of the HIV-1 env region 32 kDa. Unfortunately, the epitope was not mapped. I hope this information helps. Plase do not hesitate to contact us if you need anything further.

I have been in touch with the source of these HIV gp120 and gp41 antibodies and I have determine that unfortunately none of them have been tested against the HIV strain YU2. I can tell you that ab18633 is predicted, based on broad reactivity to react with HIV strain YU2. I am sorry that I cannot be of more assistance on this occasion.
