The Dopamine Receptor D4 (DRD4) is a protein known for its role as a receptor in the central nervous system. It is part of the dopamine receptor family which plays a critical role in neurotransmission. DRD4 is encoded by the DRD4 gene and has a mass of approximately 48 kDa. This receptor is commonly expressed in the brain particularly in areas such as the prefrontal cortex. It binds dopamine an important neurotransmitter which leads to the activation of intracellular signaling cascades.
Biological function summary

The DRD4 receptor is involved in modulating neuronal excitability and synaptic plasticity. It belongs to the G protein-coupled receptor complex which is essential for transmitting signals across cell membranes. Upon dopamine binding DRD4 inhibits the production of a secondary messenger called cyclic AMP affecting processes like learning memory and attention. It plays a significant role in the reward system influencing behavior and mood.

Pathways

DRD4 interacts with the dopamine signaling pathway which influences several physiological processes including motor control and emotional response.
