Cytochrome b reductase 1 also known as DCYTB plays a mechanical role in electron transport. It is found in the duodenum and jejunum of the small intestine where it facilitates the reduction of ferric to ferrous iron. This protein weighs approximately 31 kDa. DCYTB integral to plasma membrane contains cytochrome b components that enable its redox function necessary for iron absorption.
Biological function summary

Cytochrome b reductase 1 influences iron homeostasis and is integral to the body's iron metabolism. DCYTB forms part of a complex responsible for the uptake and transport of dietary iron across the intestinal epithelium. This protein's activity augments during iron deficiency enhancing iron absorption to maintain balance. DCYTB works in conjunction with divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) to mediate iron entry into enterocytes.

Pathways

Cytochrome b reductase 1 takes part in the iron metabolism and absorption pathways. Its redox reactions convert dietary iron into a bioavailable form that DMT1 can transport. The iron homeostasis pathway heavily involves DCYTB emphasizing its relationship with proteins like ferroportin which exports iron from cells into circulation maintaining systemic iron levels.

Cytochrome b reductase 1 connects to anemia and iron overload disorders. Disrupted function or expression of DCYTB affects iron uptake potentially contributing to anemia when impaired or to iron overload in conditions of overexpression. Plasma membrane reductase that uses cytoplasmic ascorbate as an electron donor to reduce extracellular Fe(3+) into Fe(2+) (PubMed : 30272000). Probably functions in dietary iron absorption at the brush border of duodenal enterocytes by producing Fe(2+), the divalent form of iron that can be transported into enterocytes (PubMed : 30272000). It is also able to reduce extracellular monodehydro-L-ascorbate and may be involved in extracellular ascorbate regeneration by erythrocytes in blood (PubMed : 17068337). May also act as a ferrireductase in airway epithelial cells (Probable). May also function as a cupric transmembrane reductase (By similarity).
