      Beta galactosidase is coded by a gene (lac z) in the lac operon of Escherichia coli. It is a metalloenzyme that splits lactose into glucose and galactose. It hydrolyzes terminal, non-reducing beta-D-galactose residues in beta-D-galactosides. Activation by cations seems to be substrate dependent. K+, Na+, NH4+, Rb+, Cs+ and Mn++ all activate enzyme activity based upon the substrate used.

      I would recommend ab6645. We do not know if this antibody has been used in formalin treated tissue, however it has been used with IHC and I would expect it to work with formalin treated tissue as it is a polyclonal and thus recognises multiple epitopes.

      We have some formalin-fixed parafin embedded tissue that we would like to perform immunohistochemistry on using your Rabbit polyclonal to beta-galactosidase (Biotin) antibody -- ab6645. Since they are fixed with formalin initially, what would you recommend to obtain optimal antigen retrieval, i.e. products, protocol, etc.? Which secondary antibody would you highly recommend?       This antibody is biotinylated so there will be no need for a secondary antibody. You only require an ABC kit and chromogen. I recommend ab8621 for the ABC kit (Super ABC / Horseradish Peroxidase Basic Kit) and ab8184 (HRP Chromogen kit (DAB)) for the chromogen. I will personally e-mail you my antigen retrieval protocol. Try the pressure cooker method for starters.
