Biological function summary
Aprotinin plays a role in controlling proteolytic processes by inhibiting enzymes that degrade proteins. This inhibition is important in reducing fibrinolysis where it prevents the breakdown of fibrin clots. As a single-chain polypeptide aprotinin does not function as part of a larger protein complex but rather exerts its effects by directly interacting with target proteases in the bloodstream and other biological fluids.
Pathways
Aprotinin plays an important role in the coagulation pathway maintaining hemostasis by inhibiting fibrinolysis. It directly interacts with proteins such as plasmin which is involved in the breakdown of blood clots. Additionally aprotinin impacts kallikrein-kinin systems a second pathway it is involved with affecting blood pressure regulation and inflammation.
