Biological function summary
The detoxifying enzyme AKR7A3 significantly contributes to cellular defense mechanisms by converting toxic aldehydes such as those from lipid peroxidation into less harmful alcohols. It does not commonly form part of any protein complex but interacts indirectly with other detoxification enzymes to maintain cellular redox balance. Its activity supports cell survival under conditions of oxidative stress by mitigating the damaging effects of reactive aldehyde intermediates.
Pathways
AKR7A3 is instrumental in the metabolism of xenobiotics and the inflammatory response pathways. It plays a role in pathways alongside enzymes like glutathione S-transferase contributing to the detoxification of electrophiles and reactive aldehydes. This protective action reduces cellular oxidative stress functioning in tandem with enzymes involved in glutathione metabolism to safeguard cellular components from damage.
