AIM2 serves as an important component in the innate immune system by mediating the response to DNA-damaging agents. AIM2's ability to form the inflammasome complex results in the activation of inflammatory responses facilitating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines like interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interleukin-18 (IL-18). This activity plays an important part in the body's defense mechanisms against pathogenic infections and cellular stress.
