Sandwich ELISA - Human Betacellulin ELISA Kit (AB189575)
Interpolated concentrations of Betacellulin in Human serum from 10 donors.
Serum from 10 apparently healthy male donors was measured in duplicate. Six of the donors tested below the lowest tested standard. The mean Betacellulin concentration of the four donors was determined to be 125 pg/mL with a range of 88-173 pg/mL.

Human Betacellulin ELISA Kit (ab189575) is a single-wash 90 min sandwich ELISA designed for the quantitative measurement of Betacellulin protein in hep plasma, milk, serum, cit plasma, cell culture supernatant, and edta plasma. It uses our proprietary SimpleStep ELISA® technology. Quantitate Human Betacellulin with 15 pg/ml sensitivity.
SimpleStep ELISA® technology employs capture antibodies conjugated to an affinity tag that is recognized by the monoclonal antibody used to coat our SimpleStep ELISA® plates. This approach to sandwich ELISA allows the formation of the antibody-analyte sandwich complex in a single step, significantly reducing assay time. See the SimpleStep ELISA® protocol summary in the image section for further details. Our SimpleStep ELISA® technology provides several benefits:
- Single-wash protocol reduces assay time to 90 minutes or less
- High sensitivity, specificity and reproducibility from superior antibodies
- Fully validated in biological samples
- 96-wells plate breakable into 12 x 8 wells strips
A 384-well SimpleStep ELISA® microplate (ab203359) is available to use as an alternative to the 96-well microplate provided with SimpleStep ELISA® kits.
Betacellulin (BTC) is an EGF growth factor family member that binds to EGF Receptor family members. BTC is expressed as an 178 amino acid precursor form that is a single-pass transmembrane protein (this form is called probetacellulin). Subsequent cleavage produces the soluble and secreted 80 amino acid betacellulin fragment from the extracellular portion of probetacellulin. This assay reacts with the soluble betacellulin protein. There is high BTC protein sequence similarity among mammals.

Biological function summary
Betacellulin stimulates the growth and differentiation of a variety of cell types strongly influencing the development of pancreatic beta cells and insulin-secreting cells. Betacellulin acts by binding to and activating the EGF receptor (EGFR) and ErbB-4 receptors that play a significant role in cellular signaling pathways. Betacellulin forms a part of the ErbB receptor signaling network interacting with other growth factors and receptors within the complex to mediate cellular responses.
Pathways
Betacellulin participates actively in the MAPK/ERK and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways. These pathways are important for regulating cell cycle progression apoptosis and cell survival. Betacellulin interacts with proteins like EGFR and ErbB-4 enhancing its effects on cell proliferation and tissue regeneration. By engaging in these signaling cascades betacellulin influences various downstream targets that impact cellular growth and differentiation processes.
