产品详情

Formaldehyde Assay Kit (ab272524) provides a convenient fluorimetric means to measure formaldehyde in biological samples.

In the Formaldehyde assay, formaldehyde is derivatized with acetoacetanilide in the presence of ammonia. The resulting fluorescent product is then quantified fluorimetrically (Ex/Em 370/470nm)

Formaldehyde assay protocol summary

补充信息

Formaldehyde also known as methanal is the simplest form of aldehyde with a molecular mass of 30.03 g/mol. It naturally occurs as a gas and dissolves in water to form formalin. Inside living organisms formaldehyde is endogenously produced and can be expressed in various tissues including liver and kidneys. Formaldehyde influences several cellular processes by modifying proteins and nucleic acids through the formation of cross-links affecting their function and stability.
Biological function summary

Formaldehyde plays a significant role in cell metabolism and gene regulation. It participates in the one-carbon cycle as part of the detoxification system. The enzyme formaldehyde dehydrogenase aids in its conversion to formate which cells can utilize for nucleotide synthesis and methylation reactions. This association makes formaldehyde a part of the folate-mediated one-carbon metabolic pathway essential for DNA synthesis and repair.

Pathways

Formaldehyde is involved in metabolic processes like the methionine and serine cycles which are critical for amino acid interconversion and methyl group donation. It shares significant interaction with proteins such as S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) known for its role as a major methyl donor in various biological reactions. These interactions highlight formaldehyde's importance in maintaining cellular homeostasis and epigenetic regulation.

Formaldehyde exposure and metabolism have been linked to certain types of cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. Its accumulation can lead to DNA and protein damage contributing to carcinogenesis and diseases like Alzheimer's where tangles and plaques play a major role. Proteins such as amyloid-beta which are involved in these disorders can be affected by formaldehyde-induced modifications further implicating its influence in disease pathogenesis.
