MMP classification into composite subfamilies is derived from their particular substrates. Elevated expression levels of MMPs are evident in various human cancers and cell lines. Regulation of MMP activity occurs at a number of levels beginning with MMP transcriptional regulation or their inhibition by the inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases, namely by the TIMPs.
