Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a non-spore forming gram negative bacillus with monopolar flagella. This bacterium is frequently isolated from estuarine and marine environments and is the leading cause of seafood-associated gastroenteritis in the United States. Vibrio parahaemolyticus is serotyped according to O group somatic antigens and K type capsular antigens.
