A Thylakoid is a membrane-bound compartment inside chloroplasts and cyanobacteria. They are the site of the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis. Thylakoids consists of a thylakoid membrane surrounding a thylakoid lumen.
The thylakoid proteome consists of at least 335 different proteins. Out of these, about 90 are found in the lumen. The copper binding protein Plastocyanin, with proteins PsbO PsbQ and PsbP (that are associated with the Managanese cluster of PS II), are the best known and abundant proteins in the lumen. The structure and function of many of the lumenal proteins is unknown.
