Streptococcus pneumoniae, a member of the genus Streptococcus, are Gram positive, lancet shaped cocci (elongated cocci with a slightly pointed outer curvature). Usually they are seen as pairs of cocci (diplococci), but they may also occur singly and in short chains.
Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common cause of community acquired bacterial pneumonia (CAP) and otitis media, and the second most common cause of meningitis in infants and children, which may lead to learning difficulties and hearing impairment. Mortality occurs in approximately 10-15 % of hospitalised adults with invasive disease.
