Shigella is a non motile gram negative bacillus belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family. The organism invades the epithelial cells of the small intestine to cause shigellosis. Shigella is classified in to 4 species based on the serological properties of its somatic O antigens. Shigella dysenteriae is subgroup A and has 12 serologic types by antigen type.
