Salmonella belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae and is gram negative, non-spore forming and rod-shaped. Salmonella can cause many types of infection from mild gastroenteritis to life threatening typhoid fever. Salmonellae possess 3 major surface antigens on which it is serotyped. These are somatic antigens O (group O), surface Vi and phase I and phase II flagellar antigens (H types). The H antigen are heat liable and usually associated with motility.
