Beta adrenergic receptors mediate the catecholamine induced activation of adenylate cyclase through the action of G proteins. The beta 2 adrenergic receptor binds epinephrine with an approximately 30 fold greater affinity than it does norepinephrine.
The beta 2 adrenergic receptor is activated by the catecholamine epinephrine and couples to the G protein Gs to mediate adenylate cyclase (AC) activation. The beta 2 adrenergic receptors are found in numerous tissues and cell types including vascular and bronchial smooth muscle cells, leukocytes and liver. The beta 2 adrenergic receptors mediate smooth muscle relaxation, inhibition of leukocyte function and activation of glycogenolysis.
GsaS is the short splice variant of the alpha subunit of the heterotrimeric G protein Gs. Gs activates the effector AC.
