The disease is characterized by respiratory signs including gasping, coughing, sneezing, tracheal râles, and nasal discharge. It is caused by a coronavirus. It is an enveloped, single stranded RNA virus. Three virus specific proteins have been identified; the spike glycoprotein, the membrane or matrix glycoprotein, and the nucleocapsid protein.
